Hello, everyone! This looks like a very fun class; I'm excited to learn more about social media. What does everyone think of the "bible"? :) Looks thick, but full of information!
Social media is a term I learned probably within the past year, and after first learning about it, I realized that it was something I took part in every single day. In fact, I am doing so right now. I first experienced dial-up (remember that?) internet when I was probably in the sixth grade. My whole family of five had one email address that we all shared, and I used it to talk to my friends, even though I had just seen them in school. I was quite amazed by the internet, and ever since then, I've been an internet addict. Eventually I got my own email address, which I started to refer to as an "addy," especially when I was in chat rooms. I am not really sure why; I think it was because everyone else did. I quickly learned other new terms and acronyms like LOL and BRB among many others. I often had to ask someone else what the terms meant. Kids have it easy these days; they can use an online internet slang translator, which I still sometimes have to use even after ten whole years.
I consider myself lucky to have watched the interent grow from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0. It used to be slow and very limited. Now I can spend hours browsing all sorts of different sites. I also like that I am able to leave my own comments and opinions. I was always taught to never give out information over the internet, so I often feel like a different person when I'm on certain websites. I make up a nickname and different location in chat rooms and other sites that don't have a private setting. Social media really is a phenomenal thing. One of the things I look forward to most in this class is learning more about the tools that I have never used. I'm also looking forward to learning about RSS feeds because it would save me time to be able to have one. I want to know how to use them well and how they work.

Remember dial up? I'm still on it! LOL. :)
ReplyDeleteI've been on the internet since 1999 and remember feeling addicted to my email. I would check it 10 times a day and get so excited when I saw I had a new message. Now it's more of a dread to check email because there is always at least 50 junk emails to wade through.
One thing I miss about web 1.0 was that back then, everyone thought the internet was the surefire way to make lots of money fast and so new companies were giving stuff away all over the place. I got so much free stuff back then!
Now, however, the usefulness is much more important and I'm glad to be able to keep in touch with people all over the world, if I want. I look forward to being 'in class' with you this term!
Interesting how many of us have seen the inventions and the evolution of the internet. I can remember when more people thought that it was the worst invention ever and now those same people couldn’t go a day without checking their email or facebook accounts.
ReplyDeleteIt still amazes me the advances in technology that has come about and how out daily lives are intertwined with the use of computers and the internet. Not long ago I was working in the office and the computer system went down. The office workers responses to the glitch were divided into two categories, first the “couldn’t function with out the computer” and the rest of us who I have named the “we took typing class in high school” sect. The typing class group found things to do the “we can’t function group” drank coffee.
Amazing…
I also remember when we got dialup internet out on the family farm…man, did it change my life! I immediately got a hotmail address and signed up for MSN messenger. I exchanged e-mail “addys” with anyone and everyone, and we were all the closest of friends (online only, of course).
ReplyDeleteNow, as I said in my response to Aimee, I find myself having to call my little sister for information about all of these new tools like Flickr, Facebook, Hulu, etc. After I got over how big our textbook for this class was, I realized that this class is probably the best thing to happen to me lately…I might actually be able to teach my sister something about social media when it’s all said and done!
Yes, the "bible" does look thick, but it was much more reasonably priced than some of the other books I bought this semester. I also remember getting dial-up internet for the first time. It was during Christmas vacation of my 6th grade year. At that time, my mom wouldn't go anywhere near the computer. Now this summer she signed up for Facebook and is regularly filling out internet surveys for money. So much has changed in the last 10 years, it will be fun to see where things continue to go from here.
